Prostate Problems

Prostate Health - All men should read this!
In reality few men will bother about the prostate until it starts to give them trouble. We all should know about the prostate, as this is definitely "men's weakest link".
What is the Prostate?
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that lies under the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder.

Around the age of 40, the prostate begins to increase in size. Remember, the urethra runs through the middle of the prostate so when it enlarges, the urethra compresses and can hinder the flow of urine.

In most cases guys do nothing about it and usually it gets worse. There will come a time when you're standing at the urinal and you just can't go. You feel like you could flood the place but it just trickles out. Your prostate has increased in size to such an extent that the urine stream has been pinched off. It burns like razor blades and it constantly wakes you up.
See your Doctor
Typical of us males we'll go to the doctor when it gets to be unbearable. The doctor will get you to do blood tests which will include a PSA (Prostatic specific antigen), a measurement of possible prostate cancer. On this visit a DRE (digital rectal examination) will also be done. This will give the doctor an idea of how enlarged the prostate is and whether there is possible cancer. You'll be prescribed drugs that don't work that well and Phentolamine can make you impotent. If the doctor suspects something worse like cancer he will refer you to a urologist. If the drugs don't work surgery will be recommended. The urologist will remove part or the entire prostate which will leave you with long-term problems such as leakage and erections problems.

The above has been oversimplified, but would you run your car for 10 years+ then only do something about it when it seizes up and stops?
